How a daily Shotle puzzle is made
See how answers are chosen, assigned a date and checked.
A daily puzzle gives people a shared challenge to compare. Behind it are three simple jobs: choose a suitable answer, give it a date and check that the game works. Different games need different kinds of answers.
Start with the game
Playerdle needs a player profile. Career Path needs a club journey. Player Guess needs a surname with the right number of letters. Top 10 needs a ranking with a clear subject.
The question comes first. Sharing a former club, for example, is a different question from having been teammates. The clues need to match what the game is asking.
Choose suitable answers
Not every footballer suits every puzzle. Career Path needs more than one club stop. Career Sorter needs enough different clubs to make an ordering challenge. Playerdle leaves out historical legends.
You may be allowed to guess a name that is never chosen as a daily answer. Accepted guesses and possible answers can be different lists. Those rules help the format work; they are not a ranking of players.
Check it, then listen to players
Checks look for missing records, unsuitable answers and other problems that could stop a round working. But a working puzzle can still contain a wrong football fact or a confusing clue.
Archives let you return to a selected challenge. If today’s puzzle or an archive looks wrong, report the game, date and exact issue. Reports help find problems that automatic checks miss.
